Emergeo Team is a group of about 50 individuals, either scientists or technicians, from the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), who committed themselves to carry out prompt geological field surveys in areas affected by moderate-to-large earthquakes in Italy and in the Mediterranean. All members operate voluntarily. Six of them coordinate the ordinary activities from four different INGV Departments.
In case of earthquake an intervention protocol prescribes to immediately form three teams out of the available volunteers (about 30 per month in 2004). The three teams will have the following commitments: the first team carries out the field surveys; the second team organises and summarises the collected data in written reports and maps and keeps contacts with local authorities; the third team interfaces the two field teams, the other INGV intervention groups, the national authorities (e.g. the Civil Protection Agency), and the media. All volunteers will alternate on a basis of few-days shifts. Summaries of collected data and observations will be readily made available through the web site http://www.ingv.it/emergeo/.
The group was informally constituted in the fall of 2002 and was officially recognised at INGV in June 2003. It intervened for the first time in Molise (southern Italy) in 2002 to collect data on the effect at the ground surface of two Mw 5.7 earthquakes occurred on October 31 and November 1. Then, in January 2003, it also surveyed the coasts of the Eolian Archipelago, northern Sicily, and Calabria (southern Italy) to carry out field observations and interview the local population on the effects of a tsunami generated in the volcanic island of Stromboli.
